Raised by Whales, the Sanctuary Oysters Experience

If you have seen our bold Sanctuary Oysters packaging, then you have likely noticed the phrase, “raised by whales” across the box. This messaging speaks to the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, the pristine location of the Sanctuary Oysters farm. In addition to housing two coastal lagoons and a unique, complex ecosystem, the El Vizcaino serves as a retreat for grey whales. These lagoons are recognized as the world’s most important mating and nursery grounds for the once endangered North Pacific grey whale. These gentle giants have the longest known migration of any mammal, travelling 10,000 to 12,000 miles every year from their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic seas to the warmer winter waters of Mexico. Our founder Philippe knew this pristine, clean, and unpopulated location site would be the ideal spot to raise our oysters. And since it’s marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, far away from modern civilization, our oysters would be protected from harmful development for a long time to come. This location calls for the utmost care and we actively strive to maintain and protect our region’s pristine ecosystem; sound environmental stewardship is at the forefront of all our endeavors.

Each year in the fall and winter months, we’re graciously visited by pods of grey whales just outside our lagoon. Here they can enjoy the clean, protected waters to mate and nurse their young calves. That’s why we like to say our oysters are “raised by whales!” This is also the ideal time to come and experience this natural treasure for yourself. There are many groups that offer whale watching packages which allow visitors to tour this beautiful reserve during this special season. While on the tour, visitors can opt to come and visit us at Sol Azul Seafarms - grower of Sanctuary Oysters as well. Guests tour our farm and packaging facility and see our incredible Sol Azul team in action. At the conclusion of the tour comes our most favorite part, oyster tasting! Guests make their way to the Sanctuary Oysters tasting hut and feast on oysters to their hearts’ content, paired with local Baja white wine, naturally.

Every day we’re grateful to raise our oysters within a breathtaking area that preserves some of nature’s finest creations. It’s a daily reminder of why environmental stewardship is at the forefront of all our practices. Are you ready to experience oysters “raised by whales” in person?
