A Day in the Life of Sanctuary's Logistics Team

When people enjoy a fresh Sanctuary Oyster, they often think about the pristine waters of Baja California where it was grown. What many don't see is the dedicated team working behind the scenes to ensure every oyster arrives fresh, safe, and ready to enjoy.

At Sanctuary Oysters, logistics is much more than moving product from one place to another. It's a carefully coordinated operation involving quality control, cold-chain management, documentation, transportation, and constant communication between the farm, hatchery, and distribution teams.

Every day begins with preparation.

The journey begins at Sanctuary's farms, where oysters are harvested and cleaned before being transported in refrigerated trucks to the logistics facility in Ensenada. Once they arrive, the team quickly gets to work.

For some team members, that means reviewing temperatures and inspecting equipment. For others, it's organizing paperwork, reviewing orders, or preparing the warehouse for incoming shipments. Regardless of their role, everyone shares the same goal: delivering the highest-quality oysters possible.

"Our day starts by organizing the work ahead of us so everything runs smoothly," says Francisco, who has spent more than two years with the logistics team. "The most important thing is making sure the documentation matches the product and that everything is prepared correctly for export."

Temperatures are checked. Pallets are inspected and sorted. USA orders travel in refrigerated trucks while domestic orders are packed into insulated coolers with carefully measured gel packs to maintain freshness throughout their airplane journey.

"Everything has to move quickly because we're working with a fresh and delicate product," explains Luis, a six-year member of the logistics team. "A lot of people would be surprised by how much coordination and effort goes into getting oysters to their destination in perfect condition."

Maintaining the cold chain is one of the team's highest priorities.

For Jan, "The most important thing is making sure the oysters arrive at the correct temperature and that every cooler is properly packed with gel packs," he says. "We take quality seriously because we want customers to receive a fresh, delicious product."

Of course, logistics doesn't always go exactly as planned.

When asked to sum up the logistics work in one word Roberto says, “Unpredictable.” Weather conditions, transportation delays, and last-minute order changes can all create challenges. The team must constantly adapt while keeping products moving and maintaining quality standards.

"We try to stay calm and handle challenges the best way possible," says Francisco. "There are situations beyond our control, but we focus on solving problems quickly and making sure the oysters still arrive on time."

That ability to work together is a recurring theme among the team. Nearly every employee highlighted communication, collaboration, and camaraderie as what makes Sanctuary's logistics operation special. Jonathan adds, “The moments we spend together, especially when we're dealing with delays or unexpected situations, keeps work fun and interesting.”

"What makes Sanctuary Oysters different is the teamwork between all departments," says Luis. "Everyone works together to make sure the process runs correctly."

Whether it's coordinating with the farms, communicating with management, or helping each other during a busy shipment day, the logistics team relies heavily on trust and collaboration.

The atmosphere matters, too.

While the work is fast-paced and detail-oriented, it's the people who make it memorable. Ramon shares, “I appreciate how positive and upbeat everyone is. It's a great work environment, and the people around you really make the difference.”

From holiday celebrations and company events to the everyday banter that keeps spirits high, the logistics team has built a culture rooted in camaraderie and mutual support. When everyone is working toward the same goal, even the busiest days feel a little lighter, and a lot more rewarding. "The team is united, collaborative, and always willing to help," says Jan. "The camaraderie is what keeps things enjoyable, even during the busiest days."

Beyond moving product, the logistics team also plays an important role in Sanctuary's sustainability efforts. Efficient transportation, optimized routes, proper handling, and reducing waste all help support the company's commitment to responsible aquaculture.

For many employees, being part of that mission is meaningful.

Roberto shares, “To me, it's the best approach because it helps protect the ocean and allows us to enjoy cleaner, less polluted beaches.”

Luis ads, "Knowing that you're working for a company that cares about both the product and the environment is important. It's something to be proud of."

In many cases, Sanctuary Oysters reach customers within just 24 to 72 hours of harvest. Yet behind that remarkable speed is an entire team working tirelessly to make it happen.

The next time you enjoy a Sanctuary Oyster, take a moment to think about the people who helped get it there. From monitoring temperatures and preparing shipments to coordinating deliveries and solving problems on the fly, Sanctuary's logistics team is an essential part of every oyster's journey.

As Luis says, “We handle every product with care, so it reaches its destination in perfect condition.”

And that's exactly what they do.
